So after a
lot of years of thinking about it, debating it, making excuses
and always promising that 'one day' I’d do it, that time has finally come - I’m going to become a hobo, wanderer, call it
what you want…I’m off to see the world!
Anyone who
has known me for a while will understand this has been an itch I’ve needed to
scratch for a very long time. Although relegated to the back burner by lifes events
and other things taking over, it has always been there niggling away in the
back of my mind and a number of things have happened recently that have made me
realise that there’s never been a better time to go and do it. So I am.
I’ve quit my
job, got rid of everything that won’t fit in a backpack and booked a flight and
tomorrow I fly to Canada…Toronto to be exact. Why Toronto? Because it’s a city
I love, it has a buzzing arts & music scene and until now I’ve only ever
experienced it in the dead of winter when minus 15 degrees was as warm as it
got. I hear the weather right now is pretty good though, so it’ll be a nice place
to relax for the summer and work out where I want to go next.
My plans? I
don’t have any. I’ve been lucky enough to have visited a number of places over
the last few years and the one thing that always gives me itchy feet more than
anything else is meeting people who are ‘just wandering’. I’ve lost track of
the number of conversations I’ve had with people in hostels who have no plans
and are just going with the flow and seeing where they end up. That’s exactly what
I want to do. Plans and itineraries mean constraint, working to a timetable, disappointment
and a sense of missing something if plans go awry i.e. everything I want to get
away from. No plans = no expectations = more spontaneity = more adventures.
So it’s
Canada first, starting with some time chilling out in Toronto, enjoying the
sun, catching up with friends and seeing some live music, and then north to the
Lakes and hopefully east to Nova Scotia before heading for Mexico in the late autumn
in time to visit the monarch butterfly reserves. And after that, who knows…
I’ll be adding
some little anecdotes on here along the way, along with some photos so check
back from time to time to see what I’ve been up to and no doubt what crazy
situations I’ve got myself into!
